Mary Ann WELLS Obituary

Mary Ann Wells, nee Fleming, age 74, of Mukwonago, WI, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.  Mary Ann was born on August 13, 1947, in Stevens Point, WI, to Florian “Sard” and Katherine (Hansen) Fleming.

Mary Ann grew up working in Fleming’s Café and graduated from Amherst High School in 1965. She married Theodore “Ted” Shoemaker in February, 1968, and they settled in Amherst. Mary Ann went on to run the popular Meadow Inn Restaurant. Later they moved to West Allis where she continued to work in different restaurant management positions before changing careers to become an Executive Assistant in the Communications Department at Waukesha Technical College. She spent 20+ years proudly helping students and professors. Following Ted’s passing in 1992, Mary Ann found love again when she met Richard Wells. Mary Ann and Richard married on March 24, 1994. They celebrated 28 wonderful years together just days before her passing.

Mary Ann lived her life for her family.  She participated in the Scouting movement while raising her boys.  Her hobbies included quilting, embroidery, and sewing projects.  She was always completing several church projects for others in need.  Mary Ann fought for women’s rights and equality in the workplace. Mary Ann loved taking care of her many beloved “fur babies” cats and dogs throughout her life. She was the planner of plans, the maker of menus, the eye on the details and the fiercely proud wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. Her caring heart and easy laughter will be dearly missed by so many.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Richard; her children, Corey Shoemaker, Steve Wells and Ron (Jennifer) Wells; her granddaughter, Polly Ann; her sisters, Kathy (David) Bleskey and Sue (Casey) Groshek; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Florian and Katherine, and her first husband, Ted.

The family would like to especially thank Rev. Roy Nelson for his care and compassion of not only Mary Ann, but of the entire family during this difficult time of loss.

A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 10:00AM until the time of the memorial service at 12:00 (NOON) at All Saints Lutheran Church (705 Tomlin Avenue, Wales, WI) with Rev. Roy Nelson officiating.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church (293 S Main Street, Amherst) at 12:30 p.m., with Pastor Dwight Anderson officiating. A brief burial service will follow at the Lower Amherst Cemetery. Sharing of stories and memories, as well as a light luncheon, will conclude the celebration at Fleming’s Café (122 S Main Street, Amherst). Friends and loved ones are invited to participate in any or all of these events.
